The Food Safety Law specifies the standards for cardboard boxes used for food packaging.
According to Article 67 of the Food Safety Law of the People’s Republic of China, prepackaged foods shall bear labels on their packaging, and such labels shall indicate the following information: name of the food, specifications, net content, and date of production; list of ingredients or Batching ; name, address, and contact information of the producer; shelf life; product standard code; storage conditions; common names of food additives used, as specified in national standards; production license number; and any other items required to be indicated by laws, regulations, or food safety standards. For staple and complementary foods specifically intended for infants and young children and other specific population groups, their labels shall also prominently indicate the main nutritional components and their respective contents.

Safety Requirements for Packaging Materials
As packaging materials that come into direct contact with food, the safety of food outer packaging cartons is of paramount importance. Although specific material safety standards, such as those in the GB/T series, are not directly mentioned in the Food Safety Law, relevant regulations require food producers and operators to ensure that food packaging materials are non-toxic, harmless, and compliant with food safety standards. Moreover, packaging materials must be kept clean throughout the processes of production, storage, and transportation to prevent contamination.
Functional requirements for outer packaging cartons
In addition to labeling and material safety, food outer packaging cartons should also meet certain functional requirements. For example, the cartons should have sufficient strength and stability to protect the food from damage during storage, transportation, and sale. At the same time, the carton design should facilitate handling, stacking, and display, thereby enhancing logistics efficiency and sales convenience.
In summary, the Food Safety Law stipulates that the standards for food packaging cartons cover multiple aspects, including labeling requirements, safety of packaging materials, and functional specifications. These standards collectively ensure the safety and compliance of food packaging, thereby safeguarding consumers’ health rights.
